I used a 14-days JR Pass, valid from 1-14 December, to take care of the major train journeys. Most of the train journeys took 3-4 hours, including transit time - e.g. Tokyo-Hachinohe, Hachinohe-Hokodate, Hakodate-Sapporo-Otaru, Otaru-Sapporo-Asahikawa-Biei, Asahikawa-Abashiri, Abashiri-Kushiro, Kushiro-Sapporo, Aomori-Hachinohe-Tokyo.

Early December must be a low season for Hokkaido travel. Even in major tourist destinations like Sapporo, Otaru and Hakodate, there were not that many tourists. And in Biei, Abashiri and Kushiro, the scenery just seemed to be there for my private enjoyment! For example, when I went to the Abashiri prison in the morning, not a soul was there. Similarly, while walking up to the observation points overlooking the Kushiro Wetland, the only sign that someone had been there several hours or a day ago was certain fresh footprints on the snow.

Let's start the photo journey!
