Catch of the Day (19/2/03): Judith Shulevitz on Matisse and Picasso, the Titans of Modernism (Slate, 18/2/03). It includes an 18-page slide show, made up of nine pairs of paintings from the MoMA exhibition, demonstrating "how the two artists irked, prodded, taught, and stole from each other. In almost every case, Matisse leads; Picasso follows". Controversial. Revisited (23/2/03): Visit the online exhibition and judge for yourself.

Catch of the Day (13/2/03): A number of recent reports and articles on free trade agreements from Japan: Prospects for Free Trade Agreements in East Asia (JETRO, 1/03), Formation of Economic Partnership Agreements: The Last Chance for Japan to Become a Regional Leader in East Asia (Urata Shujiro, Journal of Japan Trade and Industry, 1-2/03) and A Short History of Japan's Movement to FTAs (part 1) and (part 2) (Noboru Hatakeyama, Journal of Japan Trade and Industry, 11-12/02 & 1-2/03)

Catch of the Day (5/1/03): Salon is host to a number of interesting and informative blogs. The Reverse Cowgirl's Blog (wherein a writer attempts to justify the enormity of her porn collection) is my personal favourite. The equivalent to Salon's community of blogs in the Chinese language world is probably PChome Online

Catch of the Day (2/1/03): The hard facts about soft money (Screendaily.com, 17/12/02) gives an overview on the increasing importance of soft money in European film financing. Three associated articles: Soft Money - The United Kingdom, Soft Money - Germany, and Soft Money - Ireland. Catch of the Day (27/12/02): The Tablet PC could be the most powerful and convenient medium for managing knowledge in the digital age. May be not now, but I definitely would keep an eye on its evolution. Tablet PC Talk collects a whole lot of news and analyses on the Tablet PC. Read also How China Is Making the Pen as Mighty as the PC (Washington Post, 4/12/02).

Catch of the Day (25/12/02): Copyright law and roasted pig (Lawrence Lessig, Red Herring, 22/10/02): What would it take to put the 9,853 books published in 1930 but are now out-of-print onto the Internet? It is not just a matter of technology, argued the professor of law from Stanford.

Catch of the Day (3/8/02; revisited: 11/9/02; revisited: 27/9/02): What are "creative industries" (創意工業)? And how important are they? Creative Industries Fact File, UK / Creative Industries Cluster Study, Stage One Report, Australia / Creative Industries in New Zealand: Economic Contributions / Creative Industries in Hong Kong / Creative Industries Development Strategy, Singapore.

Catch of the Day (26/9/02): Apparently, an Indian director produced an almost "remake" of Kieslowski's "A Short Film About Love" and caused controversies, trials and violence in the country. Read these two reviews: Where is your dignity, Manisha? and Review of Ek Chhoti Si.... For more, use Google News to search for "Ek Chhoti Si" or "Ek Chhotisi".

Catch of the Day (23/9/02): 香港電台電視部9月21日播放了知產新寶藏:夢的誕生,內容是關於保護知識產權對香港電影業的重要性。節目裡有一段短短的我的受訪片段。

Catch of the Day (13/9/02): The Vincent van Gogh Gallery: An impressive web encyclopedia on van Gogh. What is more amazing is that this site is the fruit of the effort of a single person - David Brooks.

Catch of the Day (4/9/02): Just as I thought I had given up on Netscape, it comes up with an excellent upgrade, Netscape 7.0. In addition to being fast, the "tabbed browsing" feature is really first class. It allows you to surf various sites (tabs) within a browser window. The messiness of multiple windows is gone. While it is still too early to decide, I can imagine Netscape 7.0 becoming my default browser. Download it from the Netscape homepage.

Catch of the Day (1/9/02): Hey, joetsang.net has finally got a permanent home!

Catch of the Day (25/8/02): Test your knowledge and answer the infrequently asked questions compiled by The Economist. Hong Kong readers should have no problem with this question: "In the Hong Kong film "My Life as McDull", which played at the Udine Far East Festival in April 2002, who is McDull? (a) A legendary womaniser (this is the 37th film in the series); (b) An unhappy member of the Legislative Council; (c) A pig with a talent for bun-snatching; (d) The director isn't saying for fear of being arrested".

Catch of the Day (19/8/02): National Geographic: Photo of the Day, including this famous Afghan Girl 1984 & 2002.

Catch of the Day (12/8/02): Every 10 years since 1952, the "Sight & Sound" magazine would conduct a top 10 films poll among the critics. The 2002 results have just been released. What is most notable about the results is how old the top films are. Two were made in the 20s, one in the 30s, one in the 40s, three in the 50s, two in the 60s, and the most recent one is Godfather and Godfather II (won as a single entity). And this pair are almost 30 years old and did not made it in the 1992 and 1982 polls. Are modern films really that bad? I don't think so. We have Kieslowski!

Catch of the Day (3/8/02; revisited: 11/9/02): What are "creative industries" (創意工業)? And how important are they? Creative Industries Fact File, UK / Creative Industries Cluster Study, Stage One Report, Australia / Creative Industries in New Zealand: Economic Contributions / Creative Industries in Hong Kong.

Catch of the Day (28/7/02): 磊周刊自我定位為中文網絡世界的 Slate,優質而獨立。但我看,它跟 Slate 很不一樣,比較像一本個人雜誌,而且關注面也基本定在出版刊物界。不過,優質而獨立,倒是貼切的形容。

Catch of the Day (30/3/02): The Economist's new global house-price index - Going through the roof - argues that "if there is one single factor that has saved the world economy from a deep recession it is the housing market". Catch of the Day (17/3/02): 香港藝術館專題展覽:無涯惟智-吳冠中藝術里程 (15/3-12/5),萬勿錯過!但這網頁無甚足觀,倒不如溜覽網上吳冠中繪畫藝術展,更可以讀到吳冠中對其極具爭議的《筆墨等於零》論的闡釋(光明日報也有一篇《我為甚麼說筆墨等於零》的訪問)。的的確確,脫離了具體畫面的孤立的筆墨,其價值等於零!

Opening films will be Tom Tykwer's "Heaven" and Fruit Chan's "Hollywood Hong Kong" (陳果:香港有個荷里活). Closing film will be Tsai Ming- liang's "What Time Is It There?" I can't wait to find out whether Tykwer did justice to the late Kieslowski's script.

Catch of the Day (6/2/02): 南方日報旗下的經濟周報:21世紀經濟報道.
